RATA hosted an educational event on radioactive waste management dedicated to the national science festival “Spaceship Earth” on 14 September.
Students from Vytautas Magnus Gymnasium visited RATA office and took part in the event. RATA staff made presentations about ionising radiation and radioactive waste management, presented models of different types of the repositories for disposal of different radioactive waste and demonstrated measurements of the doze rate. Students were most interested in the doze rate measurement process and equipment. They tried themselves to detect any contamination using Contamination Monitor, experimented with dose rate dependence on distance.
National Science festival “Spaceship Earth” is an annual event. Main aims of the festival are to foster scientific culture in the society and to encourage young audience – especially schoolchildren to pursue careers in science.
