Lithuanian Ministry of Energy delegation visited RATA on October 8.
The delegation headed by Vice Minister Rokas Baliukovas visited RATA premises in Vilnius and Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility which is operated by RATA. The guests were also shown the special production facilities of RATA. Used ionizing radiation sources and other institutional radioactive waste are usually processed in these special facilities before they are taken to Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant radioactive waste storage facilities. After that the delegation of Energy Ministry representatives went to Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility, where RATA representatives demonstrated the environmental monitoring and physical protection systems. Also the Ministry’s and RATA officials discussed the future activities and works related to Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility decommissioning project financed by the EU Cohesion Fund Structural Assistance Programme. Implementation of the project envisages the retrieval of the radioactive waste from the storage, preliminary sorting, packing and moving to Ignalina NPP radioactive waste storage fa cilities, and to future disposal facilities.
